Fruit That Proves the Root | October 28th, 2026

Reading:

Matthew 3:7-10
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, 9 and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 10 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire

James 2:14-18
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works

Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law

Devotional

John's warning to the religious leaders cuts just as sharply today. It is possible to carry all the right labels, attend all the right gatherings, and speak all the right language, yet have a root system that is quietly rotting. True repentance is not a one-time declaration. It is a life that produces visible, consistent fruit. Generosity, honesty, contentment, and compassion are not the means of salvation, but they are the evidence of it.

Examine your root today, not your reputation. Ask God to search your heart honestly and reveal whether what others see on the outside reflects what he sees on the inside.
