The Light That Needs No Sun | July 30th, 2026

Isaiah 60:19-20
19 “The sun shall no longer be your light by day, Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you; But the LORD will be to you an everlasting light, And your God your glory. 20 Your sun shall no longer go down, Nor shall your moon withdraw itself; For the LORD will be your everlasting light, And the days of your mourning shall be ended.
John 1:1-9
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shined in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
Revelation 21:22-25
22 But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. 24 And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. 25 Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there).

Devotional:
In the new Jerusalem, there is no temple because God himself is the temple. There is no sun or moon because the Lamb is the light. Every institution, every structure, every created thing that once pointed toward God will have fulfilled its purpose and given way to the reality it represented. Today we walk by faith, not by sight, relying on the word of God and the witness of the Holy Spirit to illuminate our path. But what we experience now in part, we will experience then in full. The same God who is your light today will be the light of the eternal city. You are already walking in the beginning of what will never end.
Reflection: Are there areas of your life where you are relying on lesser lights -- human approval, financial security, personal achievement -- rather than the light of God's presence and word?
Challenge: Spend time in God's word today with the specific intention of letting it function as a lamp for a decision or direction you need clarity on. Approach it expecting God to speak.
