The Pearl of Suffering | July 29th, 2026

Reading:

Revelation 21:19-21
19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

Matthew 13:45-46
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Romans 5:3-5
3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Devotional:

A pearl is not born in comfort. It is formed layer by layer around an irritant, the result of an oyster's long and quiet suffering. Scripture tells us that Jesus gave everything he had to purchase the pearl of great price -- humanity itself. The gates of the new Jerusalem are made of pearl, and that detail is not accidental. Salvation is the gift that emerges from the suffering of the Savior. In the same way, the difficulties you endure today are not wasted. God is forming something in you that could not exist without the pressure. The beauty of what he is producing in your life is worth the process.

Reflection: What current struggle or season of difficulty might God be using to form something of lasting value in your character and faith?

Challenge: Identify one hardship you are experiencing, pray through it and ask how  the Suffering Savior can sympathize with you, who was tempted in everyday we are, yet without sin! Let that truth help you to endure in Gods will for your life knowing He is making something beautiful in your suffering today!
