2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Luke 1:3-4
3 it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.

Luke wrote his gospel so that his reader might know with certainty the truth of everything they had been taught. The word he used for "instructed" carries the idea of foundational teaching -- the basics of the Christian faith carefully passed from one person to another. Luke received from Paul, Paul received through revelation, and the Holy Spirit guided it all into the written Word we now hold. Scripture is not a historical artifact to be admired from a distance. It is a living account, divinely ordered, personally addressed to you. Open it with the expectation that God has something specific to say to you today, because He does.
