The Voice in the Wilderness | October 26th, 2026

Reading:

Isaiah 40:1-5
    40 “Comfort, yes, comfort My people!”
    Says your God.
    2 “Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her,
    That her warfare is ended,
    That her iniquity is pardoned;
    For she has received from the LORD’s hand
    Double for all her sins.”
    3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
    “Prepare the way of the LORD;
    Make straight in the desert
    A highway for our God.
    4 Every valley shall be exalted
    And every mountain and hill brought low;
    The crooked places shall be made straight
    And the rough places smooth;
    5 The glory of the LORD shall be revealed,
    And all flesh shall see it together;
    For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

Luke 3:1-6
Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying:
    “The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
    ‘Prepare the way of the LORD;
    Make His paths straight.
    5      Every valley shall be filled
    And every mountain and hill brought low;
    The crooked places shall be made straight
    And the rough ways smooth;
    6      And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”

Devotional

God speaks into chaos. In Luke 3, political corruption and religious disorder surrounded the people, yet God sent a voice into the wilderness to cut through the noise. He still does this today. In a world saturated with millions of competing voices, podcasts, opinions, and noise, God's word remains the one voice that truly matters. John did not need a platform, a title, or preistly approval. He needed only the word of God. Ask yourself today: whose voice are you most tuned in to? Quiet the noise and listen for the one voice that can truly prepare your heart.
